'The Pursuit of Happiness', Emotional Health, and Truth

The United States Declaration of Independence protects the rights of 'life', 'freedom' and 'the pursuit of happiness.' The last right is terribly flawed. The first two rights should be true for every life, but the pursuit of happiness is misleading and flawed. It's very general and vuage so its hard to define what the US declaration of independence is saying. For the sake of emotional health, 'the pursuit of happiness' should not have been mentioned. Everybody wants to be happy. But everyone should not be looking for it. We should not be idolizing this emotion. After all, it's just an emotion and should not be your dominating driving force. The pursuit of happiness ends in failure and you can never capture it full time like the declaration of independence encourages. In therapy sessions you might be asked to evaluate and ask your self questions why you feel sad. This is true for happiness. You should evaluate why you feel happy feelings. Happiness is just an emotion. Not something to be chased or idolized. You will end up being defeated.

If I could rewrite the United States Declaration of Independence, I would change 'happiness' to 'peace'. The right to pursue peace. Jesus is the prince of peace and he offers it as a gift. Peace is a gift. And something to be sought after. Joy is a side dish and a byproduct of the gift of peace. Joy is a fruit and can accompany peace.

Happiness is something that happens or is chosen. But its never long term. It comes and goes. It's an emotion that shouldn't be idolized. Thoughts just happen and can be chosen too. They should hold the greater weight. They are your truth.

Peace. The spiritual gift of calm. Stillness. Completeness; should be pursued. And can be attained on greater and greater levels.

It's ok to not have any emotion too. The lack of exitement and joyfullness is not a bad thing and shouldn't be ashamed of or looked down upon. There is nothing wrong with that. You can have a content stillness. A calm. Or even a 'calm delight'. A sort of happiness that isn't extreme 'jumping of the walls' jubilation. The intense stuff happens just like the light stuff happens. But the main focus should be peace and contentment. If you have true peace and contentment, any level of happiness is not far away. They are the best of friends.
